The Yellowstone is finally free of ice and is beginning to warm up. Similar to every late winter season, the warming /cooling trends can make it difficult for the trout fisherman in terms of muddy water coming from the Park. Thankfully, the water usually clears within a few days. The river has been fishing well for late winter. In terms of dry fly fishing, we’ve been fishing midges and midge droppers…a small single midge pattern has worked best or a high visibility midge cluster with a small zebra midge has also been productive. Most of our fishing has been with nymph rigs and streamers. Nymphs that have been working include Girdle Bugs in brown and olive (size 10 – 12) paired with smaller Prince nymphs, or midge larva. Our best streamer fishing has been with smaller Woolly buggers of various colors, especially olive and brown (size 8 – 10). Look for fish near deep, slow water.
